RISTA. The Rhythm of Basketry

Discover RISTA by UMIAR, jewellery inspired by traditional basketry. Textured ring and hoop earrings echo the rhythm of interlacing forms and connect with the hand-woven designs of the WIĘZI collection.

Traditional crafts often begin as simple solutions to everyday needs, but over time they become something much more. Basketry is one of the oldest examples of this transformation. For centuries people have interlaced fibres, branches and grasses to create objects used in daily life. Over time these practical forms began to be valued not only for their function, but also for their aesthetic qualities. The rhythm of interlacing lines became a visual language of the craft.

Today basketry is recognised as an important part of cultural heritage. Its techniques, knowledge and skills are passed from generation to generation, preserving ways of working that have existed for centuries. The recent recognition of traditional basketry by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity highlights the cultural importance of these practices and the value of craftsmanship that connects communities with their material traditions.

Although basketry is most often associated with natural fibres, its structural logic extends far beyond organic materials. The idea of interlacing elements, repeating modules and building form through connection appears in many areas of craft and design. Jewellery shares a similar logic. Chains, links and textures are often created from small elements that only gain their meaning when combined into a larger structure.

The RISTA model was inspired by this very principle. Rather than reproducing basketry literally, we translated its rhythm into the language of metal. The texture of the ring and earrings subtly echoes the crossing lines of a woven structure, creating a surface that feels both graphic and organic.

In the wide ring the pattern forms a bold yet balanced composition. The textured surface reflects light from multiple directions, giving the metal depth and movement. Worn on its own, the ring becomes a strong visual accent, yet it also pairs naturally with more minimalist designs.

The same motif appears in the hoop earrings. The wider band introduces character, while the classic diameter keeps the form versatile and easy to wear. As a result the earrings move effortlessly between everyday styling and more expressive occasions.

The motif of interlacing structures has appeared in our work before. In the WIĘZI collection it took the form of hand-woven chains composed of hundreds of tiny links. Models such as COMO, RICA and TELA are created in our studio through a process that requires time, patience and precision. Each piece is woven by hand over many hours until individual links form a fluid structure reminiscent of a delicate metal fabric.

The WIĘZI collection explores the idea of connection. Individual elements come together to create something complete and meaningful. In this sense the woven chain becomes not only a decorative structure but also a symbol of bonds formed through connection.

RISTA and WIĘZI meet at the same point. In the belief that traditional crafts can find new life in contemporary jewellery.

A craft that has survived for centuries continues to weave its stories.
