Do you remember Symbolism from art history? The late nineteenth-century movement that shifted attention away from what is obvious and visible, directing it instead toward what is hidden, intuitive and spiritual. Symbolist artists believed that beyond sensory reality there exists another layer, more difficult to define, yet closer to what is truly experienced. The language capable of expressing it was not literal description, but the symbol.
A symbol is inherently ambiguous. It never states everything directly. It leaves room for interpretation, association and personal meaning. It functions like a riddle for which each of us carries a different key. The same sign can hold entirely different meanings depending on who encounters it, and its significance evolves with time and circumstance.
In this sense, Symbolism shares a surprising affinity with jewellery. Jewellery is rarely just form. More often, it becomes a vessel for memory, a marker of connection or a trace of a particular moment. It binds object and emotion, material and sentiment. Worn close to the body, it acquires intimacy. And in that intimacy, it begins to function as a symbol.
This is why we are drawn to pieces that carry more than aesthetic value. Forms that do not impose a single interpretation, but allow space for personal narrative. They are chosen for meaningful occasions, both anticipated and unexpected. What truly matters rarely requires explicit explanation. Its presence is enough.
